Heterogeneous Impatience in a Continuous-Time Model

چکیده

In a continuous-time economy with complete markets, we show how the heterogeneity in the individual consumers’ risk attitudes and impatience would affect the representative consumer’s counterparts. Specifically, our formulas tell us how his risk tolerance and impatience will change over time, and how his impatience will be affected by the changes in aggregate consumption levels. Under the assumption of equal and constant relative risk aversion across individual consumers, we characterize his discount factor by means of a completely monotone function of time. These results are used to analyze short-rate processes. JEL Classification Codes: D51, D53, D61, D81, D91, G12, G13.

KIER DISCUSSION PAPER SERIES Heterogeneous Impatience in a Continuous-Time Model

In a continuous-time economy with complete markets, we study how the heterogeneity in the individual consumers’ risk tolerance and impatience affects the representative consumer’s risk tolerance and impatience. We derive some formulas, which indicate that the representative consumer’s impatience decrease over time, and whether his risk tolerance increases or decreases over time depends on the s...

The Impact of Customer Impatience on Production Control

Most analyses of make-to-stock production control assume that either all orders are eventually met (complete backordering) or that no customers are willing to wait (lost sales). We consider a more nuanced model of customer behavior, where the fraction of potential customers who place orders depends on the current backlog, and hence the lead time. A continuous one-part-type, single machine model...

Investigating the Batch and Continuous Transesterification of Linseed Oil by Using a Alkaline Heterogeneous Catalyst in a Packed Bed Reactor

Both the continuous and batch transesterification of linseed oil were examined in order to maximize the fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) yield. The continuous process was conducted in a packed bed reactor using calcium oxide as a heterogeneous catalyst. In addition, the impact of two variables, namely the molar ratio of methanol to oil and the flow rate (ml/min), on the FAME yield were stu...

Decreasing Marginal Impatience in a Monetary Growth Model

Unlike the standard assumption that the degree of impatience, measured by the rate of time preference, is increasing in wealth, empirical studies support that impatience is marginally decreasing. By introducing decreasing marginal impatience into the neoclassical monetary growth model á la Sidrauski, we show that (i) consistently with empirical results, an increase in the core rate of inflation...

Dynamic Simulation and Control of a Continuous Bioreactor Based on Cell Population Balance Model

Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker’s yeast) can exhibit sustained oscillations during the operation in a continuous bioreactor that adversely affects its stability and productivity. Because of heterogeneous nature of cell populations, the cell population balance equation (PBE) can be used to capture the dynamic behavior of such cultures. In this work, an unstructured-segregated model is used f...
